Do you do hired work?

I take lots of pictures of friends and family, and I have had one paid job doing an informal engagement shoot for two close friends. Right now I only do hired photography on request (when possible with college) from people I know.

Where do you take your photos?

The short answer is everywhere. I take photos everywhere I go, and I try to bring the Sony with me on trips, but when I don't have it, I resort to my back-up: the cell phone camera. So far I've taken photos in London, Virginia, West Virginia, Florida, North Carolina, and a few other spots here and there. If you want to know about the location of a specific photo, I'd suggest checking my Instagram (@oliviasphotographyhobby - link in footer) and seeing if I noted the location in the caption. If not, message me directly on that account to ask. You can use the contacts listed on the contact page as well, but I respond faster over social media, and it's easier to indicate exactly which photo you mean that way.

What camera do you use?

I have a Sony Alpha 6000 camera as my preferred camera right now (like I said, with occasional help from the cell phone camera when the need arises). I also have a few lenses in addition to the one that came with it: a long range, a fish eye, and a macro. I use the stock lens and the long range most frequently because the two issues I run into most often are "getting closer to the subject ruins the perspective" (ex: photographing something painted up high on a wall - walking closer to get within range of the painting changes the angle from which you can view it) and "I cannot physically get closer to the subject" (ex: taking photos of something on a rooftop across from the rooftop I am on).

What do you use for editing?

I've used Snapseed as my editing software of choice since about 2015. It is a free cell phone app (no desktop version), which means my photos are actually better seen "as intended" on a cell phone screen (I find that the colors are actually more dull than I intended on a computer). I hope to learn some new software capable of more advanced editing soon, but Snapseed is genuinely excellent, and I prefer it to VSCO and all other cell phone-based editing apps that I've tried out so far.

Do you ever show your work in-person?

I had one gallery showing a few years back. It was juried, and I only showed four pieces. All four of those pieces have since sold in my Etsy store (which contains a bit more than just my photography), and I have greatly improved as a photographer since then. I would love to show some more work later on, but right now I don't have the time to fill out applications. I've entered competitions here and there on Photocrowd and Gurushots just for fun, and I've received a few "expert commendations" in the process. Back in 2016, I entered a few photos in the county fair and won first in two categories and second in another. The prize was $8 😂.
